The Quick Framework
When an AC breaks down, the right call usually comes down to four factors: the age of the system, the cost of the repair, how efficient the unit is, and what refrigerant it uses. Weigh them together rather than reacting to a single bad day.
A common guideline is the "5,000 rule": multiply the age of the system by the repair cost. If the result is over about 5,000, replacement tends to make more sense. A 12-year-old system facing a large repair clears that bar quickly.
