First, Confirm the Problem

When a central air system runs but blows warm air during a Pennsylvania heat wave, the cause is almost always one of a handful of issues. Some you can rule out in five minutes. Others mean a part has failed and the system needs a licensed technician before it cools again.

Start with the two checks that solve this most often: the thermostat setting and the air filter. If those are fine, work down the list below in order.

Things You Can Check Yourself

These are safe to check without tools or any risk to the equipment.

  • Thermostat set to COOL, not just FAN: If the fan is set to ON, the blower runs and pushes room-temperature air even when the system is not actively cooling. Set the mode to COOL and the fan to AUTO, then drop the temperature a few degrees.
  • Dirty or clogged air filter: A filter packed with dust chokes airflow across the evaporator coil and can stop cooling entirely. If you cannot see the filter material clearly, replace it. In most homes the filter should be changed every 1 to 3 months during cooling season.
  • Tripped breaker: A central system has two breakers, one for the indoor blower and one for the outdoor condenser. If the outdoor unit lost power but the indoor blower did not, you get warm air. Check the panel and reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, stop and call a tech.
  • Outdoor unit blocked or filthy: The outdoor condenser sheds heat. If it is buried in grass clippings, leaves, or cottonwood fluff, it cannot release heat and the air indoors stays warm. Gently clear debris and keep two feet of clearance around it.

Problems That Need a Licensed Tech

If the basics check out and the air is still warm, the cause is usually one of these. They involve refrigerant, electrical components, or sealed parts, and are not safe or legal for a homeowner to handle.

  • Low refrigerant from a leak: Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means a leak. You may notice ice on the copper line or the indoor coil, weak airflow, or a hissing sound. A tech has to find the leak, repair it, and recharge the system. Topping off refrigerant without fixing the leak is a waste of money.
  • Frozen evaporator coil: Restricted airflow or low refrigerant can freeze the indoor coil into a block of ice, which blows warm air until it thaws. Turn the system off and run the fan only to melt the ice, then call for service to fix the underlying cause.
  • Failed capacitor or contactor: These cheap electrical parts start and run the compressor and fan. When they fail, the outdoor fan may spin while the compressor stays off, so no cooling happens. This is one of the most common and most affordable AC repairs.
  • Compressor failure: The compressor is the heart of the system. If it has failed, especially on an older unit, you are often weighing a major repair against replacement.

Common Questions

The system is moving air but not removing heat. The most common causes are a dirty filter, a tripped breaker on the outdoor unit, low refrigerant from a leak, a frozen coil, or a failed capacitor. Check the filter and breaker first, then call a tech if the air is still warm.

No. Handling refrigerant requires EPA certification, and low refrigerant almost always means there is a leak that needs to be found and repaired. Adding refrigerant without fixing the leak only buys a few weeks and wastes money.

Ice forms when airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low. Turn the system to fan-only to melt the ice, replace the air filter, and call for service to fix the root cause. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.

We typically arrive same day across Montgomery and Bucks County during cooling season, often within a few hours. Call 484-616-0539 and we will dispatch the closest available technician.
