Start With the Thermostat

A dead AC is often a dead thermostat, which is the cheapest possible fix. Before assuming the worst, rule the thermostat out.

  • Check the mode and temperature: Make sure it is set to COOL and the target is several degrees below the current room temperature.
  • Replace the batteries: Many thermostats run on batteries. A blank or dim screen usually means dead batteries. Swap them before anything else.
  • Confirm it has power: If you have a smart or hardwired thermostat with a blank screen, the issue may be a blown low-voltage fuse or a tripped float switch (see below).

Check Power and Safety Switches

Central air systems have several places power can be interrupted. Check each one.

  • Circuit breakers: Look for a tripped breaker for both the indoor air handler and the outdoor condenser. Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again immediately, there is an electrical fault and you should call a tech rather than keep resetting it.
  • The outdoor disconnect: There is usually a pull-out disconnect box on the wall near the outdoor unit. Make sure it is fully seated.
  • The condensate float switch: Central AC produces water, which drains away. If the drain line clogs, a safety float switch shuts the system off to prevent water damage. A clogged drain is a very common reason an AC suddenly will not run, especially in humid Pennsylvania summers. Clearing the line restores operation.
  • The furnace door switch: The indoor blower often shares the furnace cabinet. If a panel was left loose after a filter change, a safety switch can keep the whole system off until the panel is secured.

What It Means If the Outdoor Unit Is Silent

If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is completely silent, power is reaching the system but a component in the condenser has failed. The usual suspects are a failed start or run capacitor, a bad contactor, or a tripped internal overload on the compressor.

These are diagnosable and, in the case of capacitors and contactors, among the most affordable AC repairs there are. They are also electrical and not safe to test or replace without the right tools and training.

Common Questions

The most common sudden failures are a clogged condensate drain tripping the safety float switch, a tripped breaker, dead thermostat batteries, or a failed capacitor. Many of these are quick, affordable fixes once a tech identifies which one it is.

A breaker that trips repeatedly is protecting you from an electrical fault, often a failing compressor, a shorted capacitor, or a wiring problem. Do not keep resetting it. Turn the system off and call for service.

A float switch shuts the system down when the condensate drain backs up, preventing water from overflowing and damaging your home. Clearing the clogged drain line, a routine fix, gets the system running again.

Usually yes. Many no-start issues are inexpensive parts like capacitors, contactors, or a clogged drain. We diagnose the exact cause and give you an upfront price before any work, so you can decide. Call 484-616-0539.
