Your Oil Heat Report
Pennsylvania home heating prices as of Oct 5, 2026. The third row is the one that matters: it compares the same amount of warmth, not the same number of gallons.
In one year, oil went up $2.57 a gallon. Propane went up 33 cents.

Stay on oil for 10 more winters and that is $11,509 you never see again.
How we did the math: a gallon of oil has more heat in it than a gallon of propane, so we compared the cost of the same amount of warmth, not the same number of gallons (138,500 Btu per gallon of oil, 91,500 per gallon of propane). We also assumed your oil equipment is older and loses some heat up the chimney (78 cents of every fuel dollar become warmth) and that a new propane system loses very little (95 cents of every dollar). Older oil equipment often does worse than that. Prices are the Pennsylvania home averages reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration; your dealer’s price will be a little different. Fuel cost only. Not sure of your gallons? Add up last winter’s delivery bills. A typical oil-heated home in our region uses somewhere around 500 to 600 gallons a winter, and bigger or older houses use more.
What You Can See or Feel
If any of these sound like your house, it is the oil. Each one goes away when the oil goes away.
And the Part You Can’t See
Stay on oil a few more winters and this is what usually happens:
The wasted-heat figures are typical for oil equipment of that age, not a measurement of your system. Insurance coverage for oil spills varies by policy; check yours. None of this is a prediction about your house. That is what the in-home estimate is for.
How We Fix It
One visit to look. One new system. No more oil.
We Took the Three Big Reasons to Wait Off the Table
A full oil tank, the cost of a propane tank, and the price of new equipment are the three things that keep homeowners on oil another winter. Here is what we do about each.
Oil Buy-Back Program
"I just filled my tank" is not a reason to wait.
We buy back the usable heating oil left in your tank when we do the conversion, so a recent delivery is not money lost. We measure what is there at the estimate and put the figure in your written quote.
$1/Year Propane Tank
Through our partnership with Salter's Propane.
Salter's Propane in Eagleville sets and maintains your propane tank for $1 a year and supplies your propane at competitive pricing with local delivery. You skip buying a tank outright, and your fuel comes from a company a few miles up Ridge Pike, not a national call center.
0% Interest + 0 Payments for 12 Months
On approved credit.
Finance the conversion with $0 down, 0% interest, and $0 payments for 12 months. Full terms and representative examples are on our financing page, and we go through the options with you before you decide anything.
Why Montgomery and Bucks County Homeowners Are Leaving Oil Heat
Heating oil made sense when these houses were built. It makes less sense every year. The price follows the world oil market, so the same tank costs a different amount every fall, and most people end up prepaying or locking in just to know what the winter will cost. The tank itself gets older every year in the basement or the yard, and a leaking oil tank is one of the more expensive things that can happen to a house. Oil burners need a cleaning every year because oil leaves soot behind. Propane does not.
The reason many of these homes are still on oil is simple: there is no natural gas line in the street. A lot of upper Montgomery County and central Bucks County was built before gas got there, and in many neighborhoods it still has not. Propane fixes that. The tank sits on your property, the fuel is yours, and the equipment inside the house is the same modern system a natural gas home gets.
What You Get
One new high-efficiency propane heating system, sized for your house, installed by our own licensed technicians. Modern propane equipment turns almost all of the fuel into warmth, where old oil equipment sends a big slice of every gallon up the chimney. Whether your house needs a furnace or a boiler depends on how it is heated today, and your technician explains that in person, in plain English, at the in-home estimate. If you want central air conditioning, it can go in at the same time.
Propane or Natural Gas?
If PECO already has a gas main at your curb, natural gas is worth pricing, and we run gas lines and install gas equipment every week. If the main is not there, or the utility wants a long wait or a big fee to run one, propane gets you off oil now. We check gas availability at your address as part of the estimate and tell you straight which one makes sense.
What the Switch Involves
- In-home estimate. We measure the house, check the oil tank, and measure the oil left in it for the buy-back. You get a written price with options before anything is ordered.
- Propane tank. Salter's Propane sets your tank, above ground or buried, and we line up the fuel line to the house with them so the two jobs match up.
- Install day. The oil equipment comes out, the new system goes in, the thermostat is set up, and we test everything before we leave. Most installs take one to two days.
- Oil tank removal. Basement and above-ground tanks are disconnected and taken away as part of the job. Buried tanks are handled separately and we walk you through that before you commit.
- First fill and walkthrough. Salter's Propane fills the tank, we show you how the system works, and you are done with oil deliveries for good.
What Does It Cost?
Anyone who gives you a price for this over the phone is guessing. It depends on the size of the house, where the tank goes, how the new system vents, and a few other things we can only see in person. What we can promise is an in-home estimate, a written price before anything is ordered, and options at more than one price point so you are choosing, not being sold.
Three things lower the real cost of switching. The oil buy-back puts the fuel already in your tank back in your pocket. The $1 a year tank through Salter's Propane means you are not buying a propane tank. And 0% interest + 0 payments for 12 months on approved credit spreads the rest out.
We switch homes from oil to propane across Montgomery County and Bucks County, including Collegeville, Schwenksville, Harleysville, Doylestown, Chalfont, Warrington, and Phoenixville. Not sure whether gas is on your street? Call and we will look it up.

Common Questions
Fuel prices are Pennsylvania statewide home averages published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (week of Oct 5, 2026); dealer prices vary, and the comparison uses the heat-content and efficiency assumptions stated on the page, for fuel cost only. Oil buy-back applies to usable heating oil remaining in your tank, measured at the time of the estimate; the amount and terms are stated in your written quote. Propane tank rental and propane supply are provided by Salter's Propane under their customer agreement.
